A Novel Approach for the Biological Desalination of Major Anions in Seawater Using Three Microalgal Species: A Kinetic Study

The global water shortage alert has been upgraded to a higher risk level. Consequently, sustainable approach for ecofriendly, energy efficient desalination is required agricultural and municipal reuse. In this study, an energy-efficient biological process was used treat chloride anions, which are the most abundant anion salt in seawater. Three algal species were studied: Scenedismus arcuatusa (S. arcuatusa), Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), Spirulina maxima (Sp. maxima), under different operating conditions (saline concentrations, contact time, high light intensity, CO2 supply), two kinetic models used. It identified that intensity supply, S. enhanced removal from 32.42 48.93%; daily bioaccumulation capacity (Qe), according models, 124 210 mg/g/day; net biomass production 0.02 0.740 g/L. EDX analysis proved may be attributed replacement of Ca2+ Mg2+ with Na+ K+ through cells. study’s findings provide promising data can search novel alternative ecofriendly technologies based on algae systems byproducts reused variety ways.
